Here is your bycatch report for September. This was a big month, as it saw the closure of the Central GoA Pollock B Season following the massive Chinook bycatch event that you've all heard so much about!
Data shows that pelagic, or "midwater" trawl nets are actually in contact with the ocean floor 30-70% of the time... even in areas not approved for bottom trawl such as halibut nurseries. The results are catastrophic. Help stop this destructive practice!
At Bycatch Report we want to raise awareness about the effects of trawler bycatch with the goal of generating discussion that will ensure long-term sustainability for fisheries in Alaska and across the world.
